Jeff and Ginger Episode Guide: 1-11

Episode 1: "S.N.A.F.U."

Jeff and Ginger haven't yet realized that they are destined for each other.

Jeff has been involved in a secret relationship with Sarah, his brother's fiancee, while he has been overseas. Jeff and Sarah decide they must tell Hank the truth when he comes home so they won't have to sneak around anymore. Jeff is torn: he loves his brother, but he loves Sarah too, and he tries to tell himself (and Sarah) that it's for the best that everyone know the truth.

Meanwhile, Ginger is happily awaiting the return of fiance, Charlie. She excitedly tells Linda that she can't wait to get married right away and quit her job at the drugstore so she and Charlie can start raising a family. Little does she know her plans are about to go awry.

At the train station, the Metcalfs await Hank's return, while Ginger surprises everyone by showing up in a wedding dress, so she and Charlie can get married as soon as he arrives. However, there's been a mix-up, and neither Hank nor Charlie is on the train they were supposed to be in. Worse, poor Ginger learns that Charlie had married a war bride overseas when she overhears Caroline, Charlie's wife, paging him at the station.

A humiliated Ginger sulks at the Metcalf home and she and Linda get drunk in an effort to forget about their two-timing beaus. The next morning, Hank arrives home with Charlie, and his overjoyed family rushes out to greet him. A badly hung-over Ginger spies Charlie in the cab and in a fit of rage, begins to bang on the cab door with her shoes. Jeff has to pull her off, but it does little good--Ginger is too hurt and angry to listen to anything Charlie has to say. Charlie tries to explain that he never meant for her to find out this way, and he wanted to tell her in person, not in a letter, but Ginger won't have any of it. She walks away from him, leaving Charlie feeling incredibly guilty.

Jeff, meanwhile, realizes the jig is up and the time has come for him and Sarah to come clean with Hank about their relationship. Anne tells him to pick Sarah up and bring her over to see Hank, and on the way over, Jeff and Sarah argue about how to tell Hank. When they finally arrive at the house, however, they don't get the chance to tell him, because Hank pulls Sarah away for a private celebration.

Ginger has to face Charlie's wife unexpectedly at the drugstore, when Caroline comes in to buy spermicide. Ginger is shocked at the request, and is cold towards Caroline, who doesn't know why this stranger is being rude to her. Ginger and Caroline argue about Caroline wanting to open an account at the drugstore when Charlie shows up. Caroline rushes out to greet her husband, while Ginger is left embarrassed and hurt once again.

Later on, Hank confides to Jeff that Sarah's had second thoughts about them, and Jeff realizes that Sarah didn't have the heart to tell Hank about them. Jeff sees how much his brother is hurting over Sarah's change of heart, and he decides to tell Sarah that they can't see each other anymore. He tells her Hank really loves her, and she should be with him.

Sarah takes his advice and she and Hank become officially engaged, and though it hurts Jeff tremendously, he keeps quiet.

Episode 2: "Take My Hand"

Not much of Jeff or Ginger in this episode...

Episode 3: "Besprings"

Jeff is starting to have second thoughts over telling Sarah to be with Hank. Tensions mount as Sarah and Hank start to move their furniture into their new bedroom, and Jeff doesn't know how much longer he can keep quiet about his feelings for Sarah. He finally confronts her and tells her he made a mistake by letting her go. He wants them to tell Hank they're in love and that Sarah can't marry him. But Sarah loves Hank too, and doesn't want to hurt him. She tells Jeff she's made her choice and he'll have to live with it. Refusing to give up, Jeff gives her a poem, which Sarah later reads in the privacy of her room and tucks away in her wallet.

Jeff later goes to the drugstore to get a gift for Sarah, and ends up being grilled by Ginger on who his secret girlfriend is. After realizing that Jeff really does have someone he wants to impress, Ginger convinces him to buy an expensive perfume that no woman can resist. Jeff reluctantly agrees to get it, but swears Ginger to secrecy, who assures him that drugstore employees are like doctors with confidentiality. However, Ginger later inadvertently slips when talking to Linda, and the two women speculate on who Jeff's girlfriend might be. Linda tells Anne, who worries about whether the girl is good enough for Jeff, and wonders why Jeff didn't tell them about her. Linda can't fathom who it could be, since she muses that the only women she sees Jeff talking to are Sarah and Ginger, and "they don't count," she decides.

Meanwhile, Hank finds the poem and is hurt. He doesn't tell Sarah he knows, nor does he know that Jeff has asked Sarah to meet him alone in the park. Hank later confronts Sarah about the poem and Sarah tells him the truth about her seeing someone else, but assures him that he was just a friend, and Hank is the one she loves. Hank and Sarah decide they do want to get married, and Sarah never shows up at the park. A disappointed Jeff realizes she isn't coming, and goes home. Finally, he gives the perfume to Anne, who is touched by her son's gesture.

Episode 4: "So All Alone"

Hank and Sarah's wedding day is drawing near, and both Jeff and Ginger are hurting. Ginger knows it will only remind her of the wedding she herself was supposed to have, and she also isn't looking forward to seeing Charlie and Caroline there. Linda tries to comfort her and tells her not to go if it's only going to be miserable, but Ginger is adamant about not avoiding Charlie. Instead, she asks Linda to help her find a date to make Charlie jealous. Linda can't seem to suggest anyone suitable enough, however. Finally, Linda jokingly suggests that Ginger take Jeff to the wedding. A shocked Ginger tells her no way--Jeff is not only two years younger, but everyone knows that he is Linda's brother.

Meanwhile, Jeff is not looking forward to the wedding at all. He and Hank start to have tension, although a clueless Hank can't figure out why his little brother is so moody all of the sudden. At the bachelor party, Hank and Charlie tease Jeff about not having a girlfriend and advise him to stand next to whoever catches the bouquet. Jeff just tries to ignore them.

While all of this is going on, Ginger is having a discussion about sex with Linda and Sarah while the three women work on Sarah's wedding favors. Ginger asks them if they think women look different when they're not virgins anymore, and Linda and Sarah just laugh at her. Ginger, of course, thinks it's a perfectly reasonable question.

The wedding day arrives and everyone is nervous. Both Jeff and Ginger manage to get through the wedding, although both are reeling. Jeff later shares an awkward dance with his new sister-in-law, while Ginger begins to cry as she watches the bride and groom dance. Things are uneasy for her too, because she has had to bring her cousin as her date, and although she has instructed her cousin not to give anything away, he ends up letting it slip to Caroline, who uses this information in the most humiliating way. She lets Charlie know that Ginger is here with her cousin, and a shell-shocked Ginger then blurts out that Caroline uses a diaphragm, and that there's no way she can get pregnant. The nightmare doesn't end for Ginger as she ends up catching the bouquet. While everyone rushes outside to toss rice at the bride and groom, Ginger is about ready to fall apart. Jeff sees that she is upset and asks her if she's all right. Ginger begs him to hide her so she won't have to face anybody, and Jeff takes her upstairs to his room.

Jeff and Ginger hide out in his room, drinking beers. Though Jeff doesn't tell her that he was heartbroken over Sarah, he lets Ginger talk about her pain over losing Charlie. Jeff tells her she is being too nice for her own good when Ginger begins to waver over Charlie and says that she feels sorry for him for marrying someone like Caroline. Ginger is touched that he would tell her that and begins to feel better about herself. Later, she starts to laugh--she is starting to see Jeff with different eyes and can't believe she's feeling this way. In a bold move, she tells Jeff that she always thought of him as Linda's baby brother, but she can't believe she never noticed before that he was now a man. Jeff is flattered and tells her he doesn't think of her as just Linda's best friend. Unsure of where this courage is coming from, Ginger asks him if anyone has ever been up to his room. Jeff thinks he knows what she's suggesting and tells her that the only person who comes up to his room is his mother, and she won't be coming up there tonight. Needing comfort over their broken hearts, the two kiss and fall into bed together.

The two later argue, when Ginger brings up Charlie. Jeff tells her she can't keep pining away for Charlie if he just doesn't love her anymore, but Ginger doesn't know if she can let go. Jeff tells her she deserves better than someone who would treat her that way, and she should think more of herself. Ginger is touched by his words, but realizes they can't go through with this, because she doesn't want a meaningless roll in the hay. Jeff doesn't want to stop, but respects her wishes, which makes Ginger fall for him all the more, because he is being incredibly sweet. They end up losing their virginity to each other.

Episode 5: "Patriots"

Ginger is mortified by having lost her vigrinity before marriage. A concerned Jeff goes to see her at the drugstore the next morning when he discovers that she had snuck out of his room before he had woken up. Ginger can't face him though, and wishes they could both just forget about what happened.

But Jeff is already smitten. He tells Ginger he wants to go out with her, and a stunned Ginger can't believe it. Worried that he may just want to go out with her again to have sex, Ginger tells him it isn't a good idea. Jeff assures her that he just wants to go out on a date, nothing more. Ginger begins to soften and asks him if he told anyone about what happened. Jeff tells her he would never do that. Touched by his gesture, Ginger agrees to go out with him but reminds him that she does not plan to have sex again until she is married and asks Jeff if he still wants to go out with her. Yes, he says, and when he walks away, Ginger smiles to herself.

Jeff and Ginger go on their first date--they go see a movie, but end up making out and missing the ending. Ginger can't believe she's gone this far already on her first date with him and chaffes when he asks her out again. She agrees, but tells him it has to be in a public place with bright lights so there is no danger of them being tempted. They later go out to Kirkland Hill, where Ginger starts to ask him about his goals in life and what he wants to do later on--every woman should ask these questions of someone she's dating, she tells Linda, because the purpose of dating is to see whether the man is suitable for marriage. Jeff doesn't exactly have definite answers, but somehow Ginger doesn't seem to mind as they find themselves kissing again. They end up hitting car horn, which gets stuck and blares for all the world to hear. Ginger takes it as a sign from God and gets out of the car, telling Jeff that she can't be alone with him ever again. Jeff chases after her and tells her they're not doing anything wrong, but Ginger is unconvinced.

Somehow, Jeff manages to convince Ginger to give him one more chance, and he suggests they go on a date to play badminton. Ginger loves the idea, since it will be on broad daylight, and she excitedly comes over to the Metcalf house to pick Jeff up. One problem though--she doesn't have birdies. Jeff tells her he has birdies in her room, and they go get them. Jeff suggests that they should just tell everyone they are dating so they don't have to sneak around all the time, but Ginger is reluctant. She doesn't know how everyone will react to her "robbing the cradle," and she also isn't sure about what their relationship exactly is. Jeff assures her he has "no intentions," which Ginger doesn't really know how to interpret. He tells her that he never used to think of her as a woman because she was Linda's best friend, but now his every thought is of her and his attraction to her, and Ginger is flattered. They lean in for a kiss, but panic when they suddenly hear Anne's voice. Ginger tells Jeff to close the door, but Jeff tells her that Anne would then know they were up there. Ginger starts to freak out and promises God that if she can get out of the house without anyone seeing her, she will never kiss Jeff again. An amused Jeff tells her she's overreacting and they should just go downstairs since they weren't doing anything wrong. Ginger convinces him to stay up there with her until everyone goes to sleep. After many hours, Jeff sees that everyone is finally asleep and as they're sneaking out of the house, Anne comes home and sees them together. Surprised, she asks them what they're doing, and Jeff responds nonchalantly that he's walking his girlfriend home.

Episode 6: "Holier Than Thou, Too"

Jeff and Ginger have gone public with their relationship, and are met with more than a little doubt. Ginger is forced to field uncomfortable questions from Anne, who is surprised that Jeff and Ginger have found time to date with no one noticing. Anne later frets to Linda about her concerns about this new relationship, and Linda, Hank, and Sarah are all stunned by the news.

During all of this, the couple of the hour is slowly starting to discover just how little in common they have, and have to deal with their exes giving them a hard time over their new relationship. Sarah can't believe that Jeff has found a new girlfriend so soon after they broke up, and Jeff reminds her that she got married before he found a girlfriend. Sarah then hints that Ginger isn't good enough for Jeff, which makes Jeff really angry. Meanwhile, Charlie grills Ginger about Jeff, and Ginger doesn't exactly want to talk about this with him of all people. She accuses him of being jealous, but Charlie denies it, saying only that he's surprised she chose Jeff of all people since they have nothing in common.

Later, as they're about to go on a date, Ginger expresses her doubts about whether they should continue this relationship since they just don't seem to be in synch with each other. Jeff surprises her by saying he doesn't think they should give up, because they can teach each other the things they both enjoy to do. Ginger is moved by what he says and decides he is right.

Episode 7: "Toledo"

Ginger begins to turn Jeff down on dates, which makes Jeff wonder what's going on. He asks her when they can go out, and Ginger tells him she doesn't know. Jeff asks her if she is dumping him, and Ginger reluctantly tells him that she doesn't see a future for them. A confused Jeff doesn't understand why she changed her mind all of the sudden, but Ginger runs off before he can get an explanation.

Later, Charlie comes into the drugstore and sees that Ginger is upset. Ginger finally blurts out that this is all his fault, and that if they had gotten married, she would be pregnant with his baby, not someone else's. Shocked that Ginger may be pregnant, Charlie goes after Jeff, who has no idea what's going on. Charlie confronts Jeff about Ginger, but Jeff wants to protect Ginger's reputation and won't admit to having had sex with her. Charlie then tells Jeff he needs to do right by Ginger and marry her to give the baby a name. Jeff is stunned and runs off to the drugstore to get the truth out of Ginger.

Ginger finally admits to Jeff that she might be pregnant, and she didn't want him to know. Jeff tells her he wants to be here for her and that they need to face this together. Ginger can't believe he's being so supportive, and finally agrees when he suggests they go to an out of town doctor to find out for sure if she is pregnant.

Jeff and Ginger go to Toledo to see a doctor, both telling their families that they are going to visit Ginger's Aunt Winona, with whom the Szabos had cut off contact years ago. On the way to Toledo, Jeff and Ginger open up to each other. Ginger confides in him that she always wanted to be an actress, and doesn't know how she will ever make her dream come true now that she might have a baby. Jeff tells her she'd make a wonderful mother and that he's like a chance to be a father to the baby--he asks her to marry him, but Ginger won't say yes. Jeff can't understand why she is turning him down, and she tells him she would never be sure if he is marrying her because of the baby. Jeff says he loves her, but Ginger still won't say yes.

At the doctor's, Ginger asks Jeff to wear wedding rings she had bought at a store in River Run. She wants to keep up appearances, and Jeff reluctantly agrees. They later learn that they won't find out the results of the test for another few days, so Jeff offers to take Ginger out to see the city. Ginger's not in the mood for sightseeing, but he manages to convince her to have a cup of coffee somewhere. There, they get closer as they face the possibility of becoming parents. They also run into Caroline, who, unbeknownst to Jeff and Ginger, has run off with a salesman.

Back home, Jeff's family discovers he lied about Ginger's aunt being sick, but Jeff manages to cover up with another lie. The next day, he and Ginger find out she isn't pregnant, and they are both relieved. Jeff tells her he wants to stand by what he said, but Ginger tells him she still can't marry him. He tells her he really meant it when he said he loved her, and Ginger tells him she loves him too.

Episode 8: "Kids"

Charlie comes to see Ginger and tells her he's having second thoughts about marrying Caroline. He asks her if she would get back together with him if he weren't married, but Ginger surprises herself by saying no--she loves Jeff now. Jeff sees them talking and gets jealous, and he leaves before Ginger can see him.

Jeff and Ginger have a phone conversation later, and Jeff's jealousy comes out when he tells Ginger he didn't want to interrupt her "private" conversation with Charlie. Amused at and flattered by his jealousy, Ginger teases him by telling him that Charlie was having second thoughts about his marriage. Jeff asks her if she's having second thoughts about breaking up with Charlie, and she tells him no.

Later, on a date, Jeff admits to Ginger that he was surprised at how upset he became when he saw Ginger with Charlie, and that that had never happened to him before. Ginger is touched, and she tells him that she was surprised that she wasn't attracted to Charlie anymore, and that she enjoyed seeing him jealous. Jeff later tells Ginger that he gave up all the women in his life for her...

Episode 9: "Man, This Joint Is Jumping"

Ginger finds out about a dance contest that will be judged by a Cleveland DJ. The grand prize is a trip to Hollywood for a screen test. Convinced that this will be her chance at movie stardom, she tries to get Jeff to be her partner for the dance contest. Jeff balks; he doesn't dance and is afraid of embarrassing himself. Ginger tells him that if she had the chance to help him make his dream come true, she would, so Jeff reluctantly agrees to do it.

However, things do not go smoothly. Ginger underestimates just how bad a dancer Jeff is, and they're both frustrated as she teaches him to dance. Finally Jeff goes to a dance instructor for quick lessons, because he knows how much it means to Ginger. There, he runs into Charlie, who happens to be a tremendous dancer, and is bragging that he and Caroline will win the contest. Annoyed, Jeff tells him he's not worried about the contest and he knows he and Ginger will be the eventual winners.

Later, as Jeff and Ginger practice their signature move for the contest, things keep going wrong for them. They have a hard time with the move, and finally Jeff tells her he can't go through with this. Ginger is upset that she may lose her one big shot at this. She tells him how she's always been dealt the short end of the stick her entire life, and for once she'd like to show all the people who have always stood in her way that they were wrong about her. Touched by her story, Jeff decides to help the woman he loves and agrees to give it one more go.

At the contest, they face stiff competition from Charlie and Caroline (who cheated by learning the names of the songs they'd be playing for the contest) and some other unexpected dancers: the Sloans, and Jeff's mother and Al. But Jeff and Ginger prevail and emerge as the winners. An overjoyed Jeff and Ginger celebrate their victory.

Episode 10: "Splitting Hairs"

Jeff and Ginger prepare for their trip to Hollywood. Ginger tries new "looks" for her screen test, and an understanding Jeff gives her feedback. Meanwhile, Jeff's mother is worried about them traveling across the country together.

Episode 11: "Szabo's Travels"

Jeff and Ginger finally arrive in Hollywood, where Ginger is starry-eyed, and Jeff is wary. They rehearse for their screen test and find out Hollywood is not all it's cracked up to be. Jeff later asks Ginger if she's thought about what might happen if they win--what will happen to them? Ginger says it's all she's thought about and thinks that Jeff is willing to be a movie star too, but he reminds her that his dream is to be a ballplayer. They realize that if both their dreams come true, it might mean that they'd have to live separate lives.

They do the screen test, and even though they're told that they were the best of the bunch, they find out they are all wrong for the part. Jeff isn't upset, but Ginger is devastated at losing her big break. Later, as Jeff prepares to board the bus home with Ginger, he finds out that she has cashed in her ticket and plans to stay in Hollywood until she makes it as an actress. A perplexed Jeff tells her she's making a mistake, but she remains firm--she wants to give this a try. Jeff is hurt and accuses her of caring more about what strangers think of her than what he thinks of her. When she asks him to kiss her good-bye, he storms off and leaves her heartbroken.
