Episode 12: "Sinners Reconciled" Ginger misses Jeff and calls him. Jeff is excited to hear from Ginger, and asks her if she'll be coming home for Christmas, but Ginger tells him no. Annoyed, Jeff asks her why she's bothering to call, and Ginger tells him she wanted to hear his voice. Jeff feels guilty and asks her how things are going in Hollywood, and if she's gotten any jobs yet. Ginger tries to hide her disappointment at the goings-on in Hollywood and tells him that she had to get pictures done first, and get speech lessons. Their three minutes eventually run out, and the long-distance call has to get cut short. Jeff calls her the next day to ask how her audition went, and Ginger tells him that she didn't get the job and was kicked out of the studio for kicking the studio exec who tried to get fresh with her. Jeff is horrified to learn that people are trying to take advantage of Ginger and that she's been asked to pose in a nude pin-up but she assures him she won't do it. Missing her terribly and worrying about what will happen to her if she stays in Hollywood any longer, Jeff decides he will go to Hollywood on Christmas to bring her back. Little does he know, though, that at the same time he's boarding the bus for Hollywood, Ginger is boarding the bus to travel home to River Run to be with him. Episode 13: "All These Things Will I Give To Thee" Ginger meets Jeff at the River Run bus station, and Jeff is grumpy after having gone all the way to Hollywood only to find out that Ginger had left for River Run. He asks her why she didn't tell him she was coming home, and Ginger explains that she wanted to surprise him, and how could she have known he was coming? Jeff asks her how she could have expected him to stay away after she told him she was asked to pose in a nude pin-up, and Ginger responds by saying she never asked him to come to her rescue. Then she tells him that her cousin has gotten her a job at the radio station, and she plans to work her way up to national radio. Jeff can't believe his ears--she's going to do this all over again? He tells her he's still mad at her for making him go back to Ohio without her, and that she can do this without him. Ginger is shocked at his attitude and as he walks away, she declares to him that she knows she will make it this time. Later, Ginger goes to the Roadhouse to try to make up with Jeff. She tells him that she's sorry she hurt him by giving him the impression that her career was more important than he was, because that wasn't the case. Jeff is relieved--he's wanted to make up with her all along. He wants to kiss and make-up, but Ginger tells him she has to work at the radio station and they can't go out that night. Jeff gets annoyed again, saying that he can't believe he fell for her apology and that it doesn't look to him like she meant it when she said he was more important than her career. Ginger leaves in exasperation. Jeff calls her at the radio station the next day to apologize, but Ginger isn't in the mood to speak to him. They keep getting interrupted by people calling the station, but finally Jeff gets to say what he wants to say to her: he thinks they're fighting because of all the tension between them. Of course there's tension, Ginger snaps back, it's because they're fighting all the time! But Jeff tells her he's talking about a different kind of tension: physical tension. Ginger pretends not to know what he means, but Jeff knows she does. When he tells her he's talking about exactly what she thinks he's talking about, she panics and hangs up on him. Jeff drives to the radio station and tells her he can't believe she just hung up on him, but Ginger is mad that he's trying to "renege" on their deal of "no sex." Jeff tells her she misunderstood what he was trying to say, and says that they should try to spend more time together, but with their schedules, the only time they have in common is when they're in bed sleeping, so the solution is to sleep together. Ginger again misinterprets what he's trying to say, and slaps him. Jeff tells her he wasn't suggesting that they have sex--he wants to get engaged. Ginger is stunned by what he's just said, then reacts by kissing him. Episode 14: "When It Rains, It Pours" Jeff announces to his mother that he and Ginger are engaged. He tells her that he knows she thinks he's too young and that it's a big responsibility, but he and Ginger are serious and he'd like her to be happy for him. She says that she is worried about his future, and she does think he's too young, but ultimately, she tells him she's happy for him, which makes Jeff happy as well. Jeff and Ginger begin taking marriage counseling classes with Father Dreher. The class is sobering, and Ginger later jokes that it's ironic that priests are the ones giving advice on marriage when they have no experience with it firsthand. Jeff agrees with her, then hints that he doesn't really think they need to follow all of Father Dreher's advice--the advice regarding pre-marital sex, that is. He reminds her of what he had told her at the beginning of their relationship, that he had wanted to prove to her that he wanted to go out with her for real by agreeing not to have sex with her, but he doesn't think he has anything to prove anymore, so maybe they can forget about that deal... Ginger is tempted, and says she agrees with him "in principle" but that she can't possibly face Father Dreher if they end up going all the way. Jeff reluctantly backs off. Later, Jeff learns that the Indians have invited him to spring training. He's ecstatic! He rushes to tell Ginger, only Ginger is less than enthusiastic. She thinks he's come to tell her that he wants to call off their engagement, but Jeff tells her no--in fact, he wants them to get married now so she can come along with him. She can't, she tells him. She has to stay and make a go of her radio career. Jeff is disappointed and asks her what they're going to do now. Episode 15: "That's The Way The Cookie Crumbles" All of River Run seems to be lining up to give Jeff advice on his upcoming big break. Everyone has some sort of lucky charm or another, and an overwhelmed Jeff is just plain jittery about the whole thing. He's also mighty anxious to have sex with Ginger again, expecially since they'll be apart for two months while he's at spring training. Even though Ginger is very tempted, she tells him they can't. Jeff then suggest they get married before he leaves, but she wants to wait till he gets back. He tries to convince her that they can ask Father Dreher to marry them now, or they can get married by the justice of the peace, but Ginger is sure that Father Dreher wouldn't approve, and if they got married by a judge, their parents would have a fit. Ginger gives Jeff a baseball mit as a going away present--she wanted to give him something special to remember her by. Jeff is touched, but again, he tries to convince her to have sex with him. Ginger gets angry with him and says it's all he thinks about. Jeff tells her that it's for luck, and that all the baseball players slept with their "soon-to-be-wives" before they left for spring training. Ginger isn't buying it. She's annoyed, but the next day, at Jeff's going away party, she dedicates a song to him on the radio, and they kiss... Jeff is really nervous before leaving. When he stops by the Roadhouse to get his paycheck, he runs into Abe Davis who gives him some good advice. He tells him that even though Jeff might be embarrassed if he doesn't make the team, the real tragedy would be if he didn't even try, so he has to take this shot. Episode 16: "Bad Connection" Jeff is very nervous his first week at training camp, and is relying on all sorts of lucky charms to get him through, but unfortunately, none of them work. His worst nightmare comes true: he can't get a hit to save his life. His teammates are giving him a hard time, and Jeff is humiliated, and all he can think about is talking to Ginger. However, Ginger's lack of baseball knowledge is starting to get to Jeff. When she fails to understand why he's so upset, he gets frustrated and they fight. Meanwhile, Ginger has her own problems with her career. She finally gets her big radio break when the weather guy gets sick, and though she does great job reading the weather, she inadvertently reads the wrong copy and is upbraided by the station manager. When she tells Jeff about her troubles though, he fails to understand the significance of it either. It seems both of them are having a hard time understanding what the other is going through even though they're going through the same thing. Their problems aren't isolated to their respective careers, though. Both of them have people making advances towards them--Jeff is getting hit on by an attractive bartender who knows all about baseball (as opposed to Ginger, who doesn't), and Ginger is being hit on by her boss, who hints to her that Jeff may break her heart while he's away. Ginger assures him that he "doesn't know Jeff" and that he would never cheat on her. Little does she know, though, that Jeff has just gotten a very tempting invitation by Judy Owen... Episode 17: "Getting To First Base" Judy invites Jeff "upstairs" after she's closed up the bar, and she assures him she won't kiss and tell, if he's worried about that. Jeff is hesitant, though clearly tempted. She says to think about it and she'll be waiting upstairs. Jeff doesn't have a chance to decide either way though, because Coach comes knocking on the door moments later and reminds him he's got a curfew. Judy comes down and sees Coach and asks him if the players have curfew on Friday and Saturday. No, Coach tells her. Judy then gives a dazed Jeff a mischievous smile. The next day, Jay, Jeff's roommate, congratulates him on getting an "invite" from Judy, which means Jeff will now have good luck in his game. Jeff bristles at the statement and tells him that even though he got an invite, nothing happened because he's engaged and he wouldn't do that. Jay gives him a hard time about staying faithful to some "Ohio farm girl" but Jeff tells him Ginger's no farm girl. Jay and another player, Peach, later accompany Jeff to Judy's bar and continue to give him a hard time about not taking advantage of the fact that his fiancee is far away and would never know what he's doing. Jeff is torn: he loves Ginger and knows it would be wrong to cheat on her, but he is also very attracted to Judy. Meanwhile, back home, Ginger is gushing to Linda about how much she loves Jeff, and how she's so happy they're getting married. Linda, who is mulling over a marriage proposal, asks Ginger how she knew that Jeff was the one. Ginger tells her that she knows because when Jeff holds her, she never wants him to let go, and that she doesn't notice other men anymore now that she's found him. She said the best part is knowing that Jeff feels the same exact way, but little does she know... Jeff eventually rationlizes to himself that one night with Judy wouldn't matter in the long run as long as Ginger never finds out. He asks Judy out to dinner and they go back to his apartment. Jeff and Judy dance and eventually kiss, but he comes to his senses and realizes he can't do this--it's wrong. As he's explaining this to Judy, they hear a knock at the door. Jeff thinks it's Coach, who's come to stop him from making a mistake. Instead, he's shocked to find that it's Ginger! She's been laid off from the radio station, she explains, and she told her mother she'd visit her cousin in Jacksonville when really she wanted to visit Jeff. Suddenly, Ginger notices Judy and asks her fiance, "Who is that woman?"
