Episode 18: "No Man Loyal Or Neutral" Ginger is waiting for an explanation from Jeff as to who this woman is who's in his room. Jeff stammers--he doesn't know what to say. What could he possibly say that would justify having this strange woman in his room? As he searches for words, Judy finally introduces herself to Ginger ever so coolly, and Ginger is left wondering why her fiance would have a woman like that in his room in the middle of the night. Is she the landlady, Ginger asks? No, Jeff says, Judy is a friend. He assures her nothing happened but Ginger can't believe it. She's far too angry to listen to his excuses and she picks up her bags and gets ready to leave. Jeff tries to get her to stay, but she hits him with her bag and stomps out of the room. Luck just isn't on Ginger's side however, because her car breaks down before she can leave Clearwater. Swallowing her pride, she goes back to Jeff's room for help. Jeff is happy to see her--he was worried. She tells him that she is only there for the night because her car broke down and she will be out of his way in the morning. A contrite Jeff insists that he doesn't want her out of the way, and continues to try to explain, but Ginger tells him that it was hard enough for her to ask him for help, and she asks him to leave her some pride. Ginger and Jeff go to the mechanic the next day. Jeff is still trying to convince her to forgive him, but Ginger is too hurt. How would he feel, she asks him, if he caught her with Paul in the middle of the night? Who's Paul, Jeff demands... Ginger tells him it's a guy at the station who's sweet on her, to which Jeff gets jealous. Ginger proves her point--how else was she supposed to react when she saw Judy in Jeff's room? Ginger's car breaks down again later. She is forced to call from a bar--and just her luck, it happens to be the bar where Judy works. Ginger leaves, not wanting to stay and talk to Judy. Later, Jeff comes in the bar all depressed because Ginger has called off their engagement. Judy reveals to him that Ginger is still in town--she saw her call the mechanic earlier. Jeff is elated, realizing that she's probably at his apartment. He asks Coach for advice on how to get Ginger to forgive him, and Coach tells him to just say he was wrong even if he didn't actually do anything wrong. Jeff tries this with Ginger, who still rejects his apology. The fact that he was considering sleeping with Judy, even if he didn't, meant that he wasn't sure about their engagement, and she doesn't want to be engaged to him if he's not sure. Once again, Jeff is frustrated. Jeff finally comes up with a plan: he bribes the mechanic to keep finding things wrong with Ginger's car so that he has time to get her to forgive him. Later in Jeff's room (she is sleeping in the other bed, with a make-shift curtain between them to separate them), she complains that she thinks the mechanic might be trying to cheat her since her car keeps breaking down. Jeff doesn't tell her anything and instead tells her to check her pillow. Ginger sees that he's hidden a present in her pillow--it's a charm bracelet. Ginger is touched, even though she's still too stubborn and proud to admit it. Jeff tells her they have one last game the next day and he hopes she can come. The next day, Judy comes by to see Ginger. Ginger's not in the mood to chit chat, but Judy doesn't care. She's there to tell Ginger what happened between her and Jeff--which was nothing. Ginger is unsympathetic. She's still mad at Judy for being the kind of woman who would go after an engaged man, but Judy tells her to be grateful for how lucky she is. She tells her that Jeff turned her down, and that proves to her that Jeff really loves Ginger. She also tells her that Jeff has been paying the mechanic to keep Ginger's car from running properly so that she stays in Florida with him. Touched by his gesture, Ginger softens and goes to Jeff's game. Jeff sees her in the stands and he hits a home run as a result. After the game, Ginger goes to see Jeff. Jeff tells her he's made the team and they celebrate, but some female fans mob Jeff and kiss him. Ginger is distressed to see this. It's going to be like this all the time when he's in the majors, she tells him. But he says if it's really upsetting her, he'd give it all up for her because she is more important to him than baseball. Ginger is shocked--she can't believe he'd actually be willing to give up his dream because he loves her that much! She tells him he doesn't need to--now she knows he really does love her. She tells him he's a "keeper" and kisses him... Episode 19: "First Sign of Spring" Jeff and Ginger return home to River Run and learn Sarah has been shot. They go to the hospital, and Hank asks Jeff to watch Sarah so he can go get a cup of coffee. Sarah ends up dying while Jeff is there with her, and Hank breaks down when he learns this. Later, an enraged Hank sees Jeff patching up the bullet hole in the wall and blows up at his family, accusing them of wanting to erase all memories of Sarah. In response, he gathers up all of Sarah's things and throws them away, but Anne tells Jeff to get them and put them in the basement because Hank will eventually regret throwing them out. Hank does cool down and wishes he hadn't thrown away Sarah's things. Jeff tells him they kept everything in the basement, and he shows Hank. Jeff sees the Sarah's locket with his picture in it and takes it so Hank won't be hurt. He later tells Hank that the man Sarah was involved with while he was away was just a friend, and that he knew Sarah loved Hank more than anyone. Episode 20: "At your age" Jeff has the opening day jitters. He confides to Ginger that he is worried about making a fool out of himself in front of everyone, since it seems the whole town will be in the stadium for the Indians' opening day. Ginger tries to assure him that he'll do fine, and that he will be able to take everyone's minds off the bad things tat have happened when he does well. Jeff is unconvinced, but appreciates Ginger's attempts to encourage him. Later at their pre-cana class, Jeff and Ginger are surprised to see Anne and Al walk in. Ginger thinks it's incredibly romantic that Anne and Al are getting married, although Jeff and Linda are not as enthusiastic, and Hank is downright opposed to the whole thing. Ginger eventually convinces Jeff and Linda that if their mother is happy, that's the important thing. They later celebrate Anne and Al's engagement with champagne. At the Indians' opening day, everyone is anxious to see Jeff, but Ginger discovers that Jeff isn't in the starting line-up. Just when it's Jeff's turn at bat, the Indians lose the game on a double play. Ginger is disappointed that Jeff didn't get to bat, but when she meets him after the game, she tries to cheer Jeff up by reminding him that none of the things he was afraid of happening happened, and that she is proud of him. Episode 21: "Obstinancy or Constancy?" Jeff is stunned to learn that Judy Owen has waltzed into town as Coach Zelnick's new secretary... His mind starts racing as he worries about how Ginger will react to finding out that the woman she had caught him with in his bedroom is now going to be in town. Meanwhile, Ginger gets Linda to teach her baseball terminology so that she can surprise Jeff. It's important for a wife to take an interest in her husband's profession, Ginger explains to Linda, because it makes for a strong marriage. Linda finds the whole thing amusing, but humors her anyway. Later, Ginger tests her new-found knowledge on her fiance, and he is surprised to hear the words coming out of her mouth. Ginger tells him she'd like to go to his next home game to see him play, but Jeff remembers Judy and panics, so he tells Ginger that he probably won't get to start the next game and that she may only be disappointed. Ginger thinks Jeff is embarrassed about not getting to play, so she drops the issue. Jeff not only ends up playing, but he ends up as the hero of the game. Ginger tells him she wants to go to his next game, and she's sure the coach will start him this time, because he got the winning RBI. Jeff is impressed by her improved knowledge of the game, but again, remembers that Ginger will surely find out about Judy and again tries to dissuade her from going to the game. When Ginger begins to suspect that he's trying to keep her from going to the games, Jeff ends up telling her that he thinks his good streak may be due to the fact that she was listening on the radio instead of attending the game in person. Ginger is offended--he thinks she'll jinx him? But she reluctantly agrees to stay away if Jeff really believes that her listening will bring him good luck. Now Jeff feels guilty for lying to her again. A few days later, an amused Jay watches Jeff perpetuating his "good luck" story to Ginger over the phone, then tells Jeff that he's off the hook, because Judy has quit from her job with the Indians. A relieved Jeff thinks Judy is now out of his life for good, and takes Ginger out to celebrate at the Roadhouse, where he tells her he was silly for being so superstitious--he'd like for her to come to his games now. Ginger is delighted to hear this, but as she and Jeff are talking, she is amazed to see Judy at the bar. Judy walks over to the happy couple and inadvertently gives away the fact that Jeff knew she was in town. Jeff is afraid that Ginger will kill him, but instead, she surprises him by remaining cool and actually inviting Judy to dinner sometime. Later at at the Metcalf house, Ginger asks Jeff if he had known all along that Judy was in town. Jeff finally admits it and says he was wrong for lying to her, but he was afraid that she would get upset. Ginger tells him that she's lost so many other things in her life, but she doesn't want to lose him too, and if she has to be nice to Judy, she will do it. She tells him that she doesn't know how to compete with someone like Judy, who's so smart and pretty and experienced, and that the only way she could outdo her would be to be nicer to her--and even that is hard. Jeff tells her that she's smarter and prettier by far, and it's not a contest anyway--but if it were, Ginger would win hands down. He then kisses her, but almost blows it by adding that Ginger is a better kisser than Judy. Ginger calls him on it, but before she can protest too much, he kisses her again... Episode 22: "If You Want It Done Right" Not much of Jeff or Ginger in this episode... Episode 23: "Spanish Moss" Coach Zelnick approaches Jeff about his lack of concentration in games lately, and asks him if he is having women problems. Jeff tells him that he is stressed from planning the wedding with Ginger, because he had originally thought that they would have a small wedding, but Ginger would like to have a more elaborate one. Coach tells him he'll have to compromise if he wants to keep the peace with Ginger, and proceeds to tell him that he'll have to agree with everything she says from here on out. Jeff asks how that is compromising when it seems he's the only only one who'll be giving in. Coach tells him it's simple: he gives her everything she wants on her wedding day, and she'll give him everything he wants on their wedding night. Jeff thinks it over and decides Coach has a point. Ginger reacts unexpectedly to Coach's strategy, however--she thinks that Jeff doesn't care about the details of their wedding. Jeff turns once again to Coach for advice. Coach responds by saying Ginger is a "thinker" and Jeff will need to try a little harder to make sure she's happy. This time, he says, Jeff has to pretend to take his time considering the options she gives him and then agree with her. Jeff tries Coach's new advice, but once again, it ends up blowing in his face when he and Ginger disagree on their choice of china patterns. Jeff is tired of fighting and is at his wit's end. He asks Coach once more for advice, and Coach tells him it's worse than he thought--he thinks Jeff and Ginger are fighting because of wedding jitters, because of the physical tension between them. He tells Jeff they need to "relieve the tension" as soon as possible, and they should elope. Jeff stuns Ginger by saying he doesn't want a wedding. Ginger panics and thinks he's calling off their engagement and breaking up with her. She asks him if it was because of their fight over the china pattern and her wanting "Spanish Moss" instead of "Cloverleaf" which he picked, but Jeff tells her no, he still wants to get married--he just wants them to elope instead of having a formal wedding. Ginger reminds him that their mothers would both kill them if they ever did such a thing, but Jeff argues that they're not doing this for their mothers, and he can't bear the thought of another day not married to her. Ginger is touched, and tells him she's been to Father Dreher to ask him to move up the wedding. Jeff is thrilled! How soon can they get married, he asks her. In six months, Ginger proudly tells him. Jeff is livid. Six more months? Ginger tells him that with his baseball schedule and the church schedule, the earliest opportunity for them to get married is October. Undeterred, Jeff goes to Father Dreher himself to try to convince the priest to marry him and Ginger next week. Father Dreher asks Jeff if Ginger is pregnant and if that's why Jeff wants to move up the wedding date. Jeff tells him no, Ginger is not pregnant, but it's been very difficult to wait. Father Dreher tells him that is not a compelling enough reason, and Jeff is left frustrated. Episode 24: "Songs Unsung Are Sweetest" Jeff and Ginger are finding it increasingly difficult to resist the temptation of sleeping together, and they turn to different sources for advice: Ginger, to Father Dreher, and Jeff, to Coach. Father Dreher reminds Ginger that no matter how tempting it may be, momentary pleasure would be nothing compared to eternal damnation. Ginger sees his point, but wants to know specific suggestions to help her and Jeff. Meanwhile, Coach tells Jeff of an ex-teammate of his who went crazy after abstaining for a whole season... Father Dreher tells Ginger to make sure she doesn't dress provocatively around Jeff or cause him any more temptation than necessary. He tells her to prepare for the married life and to keep praying. Coach, on the other hand, tells Jeff to concentrate on baseball and to try not to look at Ginger any more than necessary. Both Father Dreher and Coach tell them not to be around each other if they can help it. Anne's wedding day is here, and she asks Jeff and Ginger to run errands for her. Both mindful of the advice they've gotten, Jeff and Ginger convince her that things will get done a lot quicker if they do them separately rather than together. But of course, fate has another plan for them as both end up at the church anyway--Jeff has to pick up the folding chairs from there, and Ginger has to pick up the coffee urn. Jeff starts to help her with the coffee urn and inadvertently closes the door. Jeff tries the handle and realizes they're locked in. Ginger remembers everything Father Dreher told her, and tries to open the door, but Jeff tells her that no one is there anymore, because Father Dreher has gone to the hospital to visit children, and his housekeeper left for the night. Ginger tries to open the windows, but discovers they're sealed shut. They could be stuck there all night, she tells Jeff... Eventually, they settle in, albeit uncomfortably. Temptation is stronger than ever and they end up kissing, but as luck would have it, Father Dreher comes back from the hospital and interrupts them. Later, after Anne's wedding, Ginger comes up to Jeff's room and worriedly tells him that there must be something wrong with her because she can't stop thinking of being with him. Jeff backs away and says he doesn't want her to think that he's pushing her into anything, but Ginger tells him that everytime he says that, it just makes her want him all the more. Hearing that, Jeff says it again, and again, until Ginger finally realizes what he's doing and laughs and tells him to stop it. The temptation is too strong however, and they both fall into bed. Ginger suddenly remembers how Anne was able to convince Father Dreher into an early wedding, and wonders aloud what she could have said to persuade him. She realizes that Anne is pregnant, and Jeff swears her to secrecy. He then runs to his chest of drawers and tells Ginger they won't have to worry about it happening to them because they've got "protection." Ginger wonders why Anne and Al didn't use one, and Jeff goes into a long explanation as to why his mother would never use one. He leans in to kiss Ginger, but she suddenly pulls away--they'd be commiting four sins, all mortal! Jeff grumbles in frustration... Episode 25: "By Popular Demand" Ginger discovers that a photographer from the popular magazine, Look, is in town to take pictures of River Run, and she excitedly calls Linda. She tells her that she will do everything she can to make sure she gets her picture taken by him. Meanwhile, Jeff is having a really bad day at the ballpark. It seems that every insect is swarming around him today, and as a result, he can't concentrate on the game. He ends up dropping an easy catch and though the Indians end up winning the game, he feels horrible about his error almost costing his team the victory. He later finds out from Judy that he was being sabotaged by his teammate, Bernie, who is competing with Jeff to get a lucrative endorsement contract. Jeff is really anxious to land the contract because he and Ginger would be able to put a down payment on their own house. He confronts Bernie in the locker room about sabotaging him, but ends up being scolded by Coach. Coach later confides to Ginger that she may be able to help Jeff get the contract if she can find a way to convince the ad man that Jeff has many devoted fans. Coach arranges for her to conveniently get a seat next to him at the next game, but Ginger tells him she has to work. Coach tells her he'll get the ticket anyway and hope she can find an excuse to get off work. Ginger is following the photographer all across town, but keeps ending up one step behind. Finally, Judy calls her at the radio station and gives her the photographer's schedule, but Ginger still can't--she'll be fired if she leaves the station. Judy comes to the station to sub for Ginger so Ginger can catch the photographer, but Coach calls just as Ginger is leaving to tell her he was able to get get her a ticket next to the ad man. Ginger decides to help Jeff instead of getting her picture taken. She succeeds in charming the man into believing that Jeff might be the ideal player for the endorsement contract, but unfortunately, her ruse is discovered when he takes her to "meet" Jeff and a jealous Jeff (who was told by Bernie that the ad man had a reputation for seducing the wives of baseball players to whom he gave endorsement contracts) punches the man when he thinks that Ginger is being taken advantage of. Later in the car, Jeff asks what she was doing at the stadium, and Ginger tells him that she was trying to help him get the endorsement, and she almost succeeded until he lost his temper. Jeff tells her that he knew of the man's reputation and he was afraid he was trying to try something with Ginger. Ginger tells him that she almost got her picture in Look, but she had come to help him instead. Jeff is surprised and stops the car--she didn't get her picture taken after all? No, Ginger tells him, she came to the stadium instead. Jeff can't believe she'd do that for him. He tells her he loves her and grabs her for a kiss. He then tells her that he had bribed the photographer to go to the station to take her picture. A touched Ginger kisses him back...
