Episode 26: "The Lemo Tomato Juice Hour" Jeff has his first taste of fame as he gets stopped for an autograph while he and Ginger are at the Roadhouse. They also get treated to free drinks, courtesy of his fans. While Jeff chats with his fans, Ginger confides to Judy that although she's proud of Jeff, she would have loved to have had her shot at fame too, before she gets married. Judy tells her she shouldn't give up and she should keep on fighting for her chance until she gets it. Inspired, Ginger tells Mr. Melon, the station manager, that she would like a promotion, but Mr. Melon fires her instead. By twist of fate however, Mr. Lemo, the sponsor of the Lemo Tomato Juice Hour at WREQ, is at the station, and after a fight with his wife over the phone, he impulsively gives Ginger the bracelet he was going to give his wife. Mr. Melon mistakenly thinks that Ginger is Mr. Lemo's mistress, and promptly tells her that everything was a huge misunderstanding and she was never fired. He then creates a special job for her as the new script overseer. Meanwhile, Jeff is intent on finding his own baseball card in a loaf of bread. The Metcalfs stock up on loaves, but keep finding cards of other baseball players instead. It seems everyone has Jeff's card except for the Metcalfs. At the radio station, it's one mishap after the other for poor Ginger. As script overseer, she inadvertently hands the wrong script to the actors, and because he can't fire her, Mr. Melon gives her another job--as an assistant to another radio hostess. But when Ginger brings her some fresh-baked goodies on her first day, the hostess gets food stuck in her mouth and subsequently can't talk on the radio. Finally, Mr. Melon gives her a job as a gag-tester for a stunt show, but Ginger ends up knocking a worker unconscious as she's testing a gag. Just when things look hopeless, Mr. Lemo spots Ginger walking by just as he's fired his Lemo Tomato Juice Girl and tells Mr. Melon that Ginger should be the next Lemo Girl. Mr. Melon tells Ginger that all she'll have to do on the Lemo Tomato Juice Hour is lip synch to the song and then wave to the audience. But in the hustle and bustle of the pre-show, Ginger's earring gets lost and a worker slips on it, crashes into the control booth guy, and the Lemo theme song record falls to the ground and breaks. Ginger is forced to perform live. She does great though, and gets hearty applause from the audience, which includes her proud fiance, who can't stop smiling at her on the stage. Later at the Roadhouse, more free drinks come, but this time, they are from Ginger's fans, and Ginger is delighted that now both she and Jeff are famous. Jeff smiles at her and tells her he is proud of her, then leans in to kiss her. Ginger is thrilled that everything seems to be going great in her life--she's finally gotten her big showbiz break, and she's marrying Jeff in three weeks. But she's horrified to find out from Mr. Lemo that she won't be able to get married at all if she wants to keep being the Lemo Tomato Juice Girl. It seems the last one was fired precisely because she got married. Ginger protests. He always knew she had a boyfriend, she tells Mr. Lemo, but Mr. Lemo is adamant. Get married, and she'll lose her job. Episode 27: "Can't Say No" Jeff is shopping for pajamas for his honeymoon. After trying out several different ones, he's still undecided. Finally, the shopclerk tells him to choose the one he'd most like to see Ginger wearing the top of--so he chooses the yellow pajamas because yellow is Ginger's color. Meanwhile, Ginger is all set to quit her job at the station so she can marry Jeff. She tells Judy that if she has to choose between being the Lemo Tomato Juice Girl and being Jeff's wife, of course she'd choose to be Jeff's wife. Ginger prepares to tell Mr. Melon that she is quitting, but just as she's about to tell him, they bring in a lifesize cardboard cutout of her, and Ginger finds herself unable to tell Mr. Melon what she's decided. She then decides to write him a letter instead, because it might be easier to get it out that way. Again she is thwarted however, because Mr. Melon tells her that he'd like her to sing a love song for the next show, and somehow she can't bring herself to give him the letter. Jeff is as proud as can be. He tells her what a great team they make, and how she'll be even bigger than Betty Grable. Ginger is touched that he would think so, but she knows she'll have to give up her dream before she can make it that big because otherwise she won't be able to marry Jeff. She is still really torn, but after Jeff tells her about all he's planned for their honeymoon, Ginger's resolve is strengthened--she is definitely going to quit being the Lemo Girl to marry Jeff now!! While Ginger is at a game watching Jeff, she imagines what their future will be like. She pictures her and Jeff happily married with many children, and although she loves her life, she envies the new Lemo Girl (Judy) who will be in her very own movie. Again, Ginger is torn. Later as she and Jeff are talking during one of his practices, they see the Lemo Tomato Juice billboard being changed, and Ginger's head replacing the head of the old girl. Jeff tells her it will bring him good luck, having her looking over his shoulder at right field. Ginger works up the courage to tell Jeff that she'd like to take this one last shot she has at her dream... She asks him if they can postpone the wedding, and Jeff agrees, but then Ginger tells him she'd like to postpone it for a year. Jeff is speechless.
Episode 28: "Appleknocker To Wed Tomatohawker" Jeff and Ginger meet with Father Dreher and ask him to marry them in secret so that they can get married without Mr. Lemo having to find out, but Father Dreher thinks the request is too unusual and refuses to do it. Jeff can see how much this one chance means to Ginger, and tells her they can postpone the wedding for another three months if that gives her enough time to get her next big break. Ginger can't believe how wonderful Jeff is, and thanks him for giving her this shot at her dream. Jeff grows increasingly uncomfortable with Ginger's Lemo gig, however. He finds the Lemo Tomato Juice calendar with Ginger posing in her skimpy costume, and he gets jealous of other men seeing her like this. He also gets jealous when a contest features a date with Ginger as the grand prize. Jeff ends up sabotaging the date by posing as a hapless waiter. Ginger is mad at him for almost getting her fired by ruining the publicity stunt, but later forgives him when Jeff apologizes for going overboard. Conflict arises again later when the owner of the Cleveland Indians wants to meet Ginger at Jeff and Ginger's party, but Ginger can't go to the party because of a commitment at the station--the regular soloist loses her voice, and the station wants her to sub at the last minute. It's only one song, Ginger tells Jeff, but Jeff says by the time she finishes his boss will have left already, and he wants her to nix her gig and come to the party instead. When she refuses, Jeff goes to the station to take her home. They end up fighting--Jeff wants her to quit her job at the station and come home with him and marry him right away. He never expected things to get this out of hand, he says. Ginger pleads with him--this is her dream, and this is her big break. Jeff says he offered to give up baseball for her, and she should have been willing to do the same. Ginger asks him if he thought she was ever going to make it in show business, and if he was reacting this way because he didn't think she would. Jeff tells her that he never thought about what would happen if she did make it, and now he realizes that he may have to be apart from her if her career really takes off. He tells her he doesn't want to come home to an empty house, and he doesn't want to kiss a radio. Ginger kisses him to reassure him that she loves him and nothing is going to change between them, but she determined to sing her song. She asks him to tell her to break a leg, but instead he begs her one final time to come home with him. When Ginger doesn't answer him, Jeff knows that she's made her choice. Jeff watches her start to sing her song, then leaves. Ginger sees him leaving and starts crying because she knows she may have lost him for good. Jeff listens to her song in the car as he's driving him and fights back tears, then turns the radio off when the song is over. Episode 29: "A Nickel Plate Romance" Jeff and Ginger are both on the rebound... Jeff announces to everyone who will listen that he's a free man now--no longer engaged to the tomato girl--and he plans on celebrating by buying a new convertible that will surely attract the ladies. His teammate, Arthur Schillhab, asks Jeff if this means he is free to ask Ginger out, and because Jeff doesn't want to show that he cares one way or the other, he says go ahead. Ginger is surprised when Arthur asks her out. Did Jeff tell him it was ok to do so, she asks Arthur. Arthur tells her he did, which disturbs Ginger. She then tells Arthur that she hates baseball and doesn't want to settle down right now because she wants to pursue her career full throttle. Arthur gives her all the right answers and tells her that he plans to become a lawyer after his baseball career is over, and by the time he's established, Ginger would probably be a box office sensation. Ginger asks Arthur if Jeff put him up to this, but Arthur tells her no. Thinking that Jeff must really not want anything to do with her anymore, she agrees to go out with Arthur. Jeff is hanging out at the Roadhouse and everyone is giving him advice on how to get over a broken heart--first Judy (who turns down Jeff's offer for a date), then Al. But Jeff doesn't want to hear it. He's not heartbroken, he insists, nor is he on the rebound. Suddenly he sees Ginger walk in with Arthur and not wanting Ginger to think he was in there alone, he sits himself at a surprised Caroline's table. Caroline agrees to help Jeff make Ginger jealous, and it works. Ginger can't believe Jeff is flirting with a married woman, even though she suspects he's only doing it to make her jealous. Arthur asks her to dance, and seeing this, Jeff asks Caroline to dance. But the former lovebirds only have eyes for each other as they're dancing with different partners. Finally, Jeff decides he can't bear to see her with Arthur anymore, and tells Caroline he wants to go home and he'll drive her. In the car, Jeff flirts with Caroline, telling her he can't understand why Charlie has such a hold on women, and that she's not the first woman he's seen cry her eyes out over him. Caroline is happy to have a sympathetic ear for once, and they later kiss. Jeff is still upset when he comes home. He and Charlie get into a disagreement over Caroline, and Linda fares no better as she finds her little brother biting her head off as well. Linda tells him he's just upset over his breakup with Ginger and that he's just on the rebound right now. Jeff tries to deny it and launches into a long rationalization about why he's upset, but in a slip of the tongue, he blurts out that he's riled up over Ginger. The next day, Ginger is over at the Metcalf house and sees Jeff's new car. She laments to Linda that it doesn't look much like a family car, and it upsets her to think that Jeff bought the car only to act like a bachelor. Linda tells her Jeff probably only bought the car because he was upset over breaking up with her, but Ginger doesn't buy it. She later finds a compact in the car and determines that it's Caroline's, and that Caroline and Jeff must have gotten closer after leaving the Roadhouse. Ginger is devastated, and takes the compact, telling Linda that if she can help it, Caroline won't get the chance to go even further with Jeff. Meanwhile, Jeff must share a train with Arthur, and all the while he is stewing over Arthur's date with Ginger. He thinks that Arthur deliberately came to the train disheveled to make Jeff think that something happened between him and Ginger, but Jeff assures him he's not buying it, because he knows Ginger. Jeff later sees Arthur with a souvenir (a pillow) for Ginger and blows up at him, but Arthur tells him he won't argue with him because he knows he's on the rebound. Jeff can't deny it and simply sulks. Back in River Run, Ginger is looking at a picture of Jeff, and out of pain, throws it away. Jeff does the same with the cans of Lemo Tomato Juice he sees in their pantry. Both can't stop thinking of each other though. Episode 30: "When The Stars Begin To Fall" Jeff and Ginger continue to deal with the aftermath of their breakup. Deep in denial over his heartbreak, Jeff pursues Judy, who finally gives in and agrees to go out with him because she's heartbroken herself. Jeff soon realizes this, when they kiss on their date and he notices that she's just going through the motions. He guesses that Judy's on the rebound too, which she denies, but Jeff knows better--he knows all the signs, he tells her. He then wonders aloud why every woman he goes out with is always pining over another man, and he asks Judy why they go out with him if they're really in love with someone else. Judy tries to tell him it's because he's sweet, but Jeff recoils, because Ginger used to always tell him the same thing. Ginger on the other hand, is not so good at hiding the fact that she's having a hard time with the breakup. Desperate for help, she turns to Judy for advice in dealing with everything, but Judy turns her away, saying that she's the worst person in the world to ask for advice since she herself has been burned by it. Ginger persists though--Judy's always been right where she's concerned, and she really needs help in getting over Jeff before she kills herself. An amused and exasperated Judy asks her why she just doesn't get back together with Jeff, but Ginger tells her that they just don't get along. Judy can't tell her anything useful other than to try to find a hobby and stay away from married men. Ginger then guesses that Judy is on the rebound too, and their conversation switches topics... Jeff is preparing to board the train to go on his barnstorm tour--the same one that Ginger will be going on, because Lemo Tomato Juice is sponsoring the tour. Neither is happy that the other will be going on the tour, but things really get ugly when Caroline shows up on the same train, to get a divorce in Reno. Ginger has to watch while Jeff makes an obvious attempt to flirt with Caroline. Episode 31: "The Traveling Lemo All-Stars" Jeff and Ginger are both on the Lemo All-Star tour, and neither is too happy to have to share the train ride with the other. Miss Wescott enforces very strict rules among the ballplayers, and informs them that once they've gotten six demerits, they will be kicked off the team. Jeff wastes no time collecting one demerit after another, thanks to Caroline's help. A scheming Caroline wants to get with Jeff because he's a rich ballplayer, so she gets Miss Wescott drunk in order to sneak into Jeff's berth and seduce him. Meanwhile, Arthur Schillhab is trying his best to seduce Ginger. He convinces her to have dinner with him in his roomette (Ginger insists on keeping the door open). Though Ginger resists, Arthur persists in trying to charm Ginger. Wary, Ginger finally tells him she needs to go and goes back to her roomette. But a drunken Miss Wescott stumbles into Arthur's roomette, dressed in Ginger's Lemo outfit, and throws herself at Arthur. She eventually passes out in Arthur's bed, and Jeff sees her as he's passing by, but assumes it's Ginger. Now he's mad. The next morning, Ginger sees Jeff and Caroline together and she's upset--she also makes no secret about it, as she picks a fight with Jeff over Caroline in front of Caroline. Jeff counters with his anger over her and Arthur, though he doesn't come out and say what he saw, so Ginger has no idea that Jeff thinks she slept with Arthur. The fighting comes to a head after the next game when MVP Jeff has to do the post-game radio interview with Ginger and he ruins their skit by insulting Lemo Tomato Juice and Ginger. Ginger can't believe what he just did, and Arthur tries to impress her by punching Jeff. Jeff assumes he's kicked off the team, and he packs his bags and goes. Mr. Melon has other ideas, however. He's just been told my Mr. Lemo that the sales of the tomato juice went through the roof when Jeff was on the air with Ginger, and he wants to make Jeff a permanent performer on the Lemo Tomato Juice Hour. Mr. Melon tries to talk Jeff into staying by offering him the radio job, but Jeff tells him he doesn't want to work with Ginger. Just as he turns to leave, Jeff bumps into a man pushing cases of tomatoes and slips and breaks his leg. Episode 32: "First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage" Jeff is surly because he suffered an injury that forced him off the tour, and he now has to tend bar during the off season so he can make his car payments. When the bank turns down his request to delay his payments, Jeff decides he has to sell his car because his bartending job will not be able to cover the monthly payments. Jeff thinks his jinx may finally be over when Caroline calls him to ask him out on a date. He gladly accepts, though he has doubts after Charlie tells him Caroline is just out to get his money. Meanwhile, Ginger's career as the Lemo Girl is starting to take a turn for the worse. Sales have been slipping ever since she began the show with Arthur (who took over when Jeff turned down the job). Mr. Melon fires him and tries several other Cleveland Indians as her replacement, but none can match the sales figures that Jeff brought in. Mr. Melon tells Ginger he'd like to hire Jeff, but she refuses to work with him. Mr. Melon goes to Jeff anyway and asks him. Though Jeff needs the money for his car payments, he won't take the job if it means working with Ginger. Ginger finds out that she is slowly being phased out, as Mr. Lemo wants to shift his focus from tomato juice to orange juice. This means getting a new Lemo Orange Girl, which Ginger can't be, because she is "too identifyable" as the Tomato Juice Girl. Jeff finally finds a buyer for his car, but only after he brings the price down significantly. Things take a turn for the worse though, when he learns from the doctor that he will never be able to play baseball again. Feeling lousy over the latest turn of events, he tries to get his mind off his troubles by going to a make-out point with Caroline. Little does he know that Ginger's in the next car with Arthur, who's once again trying to charm her by cheering her up about her problems at the radio station. Caroline puts Jeff's car into neutral while they're kissing so she can somehow get out of having to sleep with him (now that she's found out he can no longer play ball, and hence, will no longer be rich). The car ends up crashing into Arthur's, and it gets ruined, so now Jeff can't sell it. Jeff, Caroline, Ginger, and Arthur all come out of their respective cars and see that they are all with the other person. Ginger gets upset when she sees Jeff and Caroline together, as does Jeff when he sees Ginger with Arthur, and he hears Arthur fretting about losing a ring. Unable to sell his car, Jeff is desperate--he finally takes Mr. Melon's job offer but makes it perfectly clear to Ginger that he's only doing this for the money and that he doesn't like having to work with her. Ginger tells him the same and they argue on the way to the stage. Home| Kyle| Tammy| History| Transcripts|Quotes|Milestones|Episodes| Pictures| Fanfic| Links| Email List |
