Episode 35: "On The Rebound"

Jeff is waiting for his cue to go onstage for the radio show, and Miss Wescott comes to speak to him. She unwittingly causes him to get stage fright, so when he goes on stage, he can't utter a word, and Ginger is forced to cover for him. Ginger confronts him after the show, reminding him that they both need this job. Jeff tells her about his stage fright, and she offers to help him by rehearsing. Jeff agrees, but Arthur comes to pick Ginger up before they can rehearse, so they schedule a time to meet later.

Ginger is able to help Jeff get his mind of his stage fright during the rehearsal, and both forget for a moment that they haven't been getting along lately. Jeff impulsively asks her out to coffee, but Ginger tells him that she promised to meet Arthur after they were done rehearsing. Jeff is disappointed but doesn't say anything to Ginger. Instead, he calls Caroline up to ask her for a date, and the former Mrs. Hailey is all too willing to oblige.

Ginger is talking to Gina about possibly getting back together with Jeff, and Gina tells her that she knew it would only be a matter of time before Jeff and Ginger get back together and live happily ever after. Ginger says that it might happen sooner than Gina thinks, but is crushed when she sees Jeff picking Caroline up for their date.

Jeff and Caroline go out on a date and almost end up having sex in her apartment, until Jeff's shirt catches on fire and they are interrupted by Charlie and Gina who help them put out the fire. Charlie is disgusted by the sight of his ex-wife with Jeff, but says nothing. Later, Charlie does confront Jeff and tells him that Caroline is only out to take advantage of him, but Jeff tells Charlie that he wants to be taken advantage of.

Meanwhile, Jeff is upset because the show only gave him three lines in the next skit. Mr. Melon implies that it's because he blew the last skit. However, Caroline stirs a little trouble by going on and on about how Jeff should be the real star of the show because housewives who buy Lemo Tomato Juice would see Ginger as the competition. Mr. Melon overhears this, and promptly arranges it so that Jeff will get more of the lines next time.

Jeff and Caroline finally do the deed in a motel, and this finally relieves his "tension" and he's able to perform well on the next show. Ginger congratulates Jeff on what a great job he did. Jeff tells her that rehearsing with her helped a lot. Ginger asks Jeff if he'd like to rehearse again for the next show, but they get interrupted by Caroline and Arthur.

Mr. Melon decides to fire Ginger from the show, telling her that consumers think of her as competition for Jeff. Ginger is upset, and suspects that someone must have had her fired. Arthur is trying to comfort her, and finally he proposes. A stunned Ginger can't say anything.

Jeff finds out that Ginger's been fired, and he tells Mr. Melon that he refuses to go on the air without her. Mr. Melon is offended, and tells him it's just the nature of show business. He tells him that he's getting all kinds of fan letters (which were actually sent in my Jeff's mother and her friends). Jeff stands firm though, and tells Mr. Melon that he has to rehire Ginger, and if the budget can't support the two of them he will quit.

Ginger and Linda are talking about Arthur's proposal. Ginger tells Linda that she's tired of being a bridesmaid and she wants to settle down and have a family. She goes into a long rationalization about how Arthur makes the perfect husband, but Linda knows better. Though Ginger is going on about how much Arthur loves her, she hasn't yet heard Ginger say that she loves Arthur. Just as she's about to point this out, Ginger gets a call from the station.

Meanwhile, Jeff asks Judy for advice. He tells her that something has puzzled him ever since he and Caroline got together--Judy beats him to it, and tells him she knows what he's trying to say, that his roll in the hay with Caroline wasn't as great as he expected it to be because he is still in love with someone else. Jeff finally realizes he isn't over Ginger, and he decides to ask her to take him back, but just as he's about to, Miss Wescott tells him that Ginger has accepted Arthur's proposal. Jeff is stunned.

Episode 37: "Like Being There When You're Not"

Jeff and Ginger are both worried about their job security when WREQ ushers in the television age by turning into a television studio. Although Mr. Melon assures everyone that their jobs are safe, Jeff and Ginger know better. Arthur tells Ginger they have no reason to fire either of them, but Ginger reminds him that they will not let her be the Lemo Girl anymore once they learn she's engaged.

Meanwhile, Jeff has other troubles on his hands when word gets out that his injury may cause him the season. The team doctor examines him, and the team decides not to send him to Spring Training in Arizona. Things then go from bad to worse when Jeff subsequently gets fired from the Lemo Tomato Juice Hour because he's no longer a ballplayer. Jeff storms out of Mr. Melon's office and again tells him how much this job means to Ginger and that if Mr. Melon were to fire her he'd be stupider than show business, which he already considers stupid. On his way out of the station, he runs into Ginger, who is concerned over Jeff's situation. What will he do, she asks him, but Jeff tells her not to worry about him because he'll manage somehow. Ginger tells him she'll do whatever she can to make sure they don't get rid of her.

In a pre-emptive strike, Ginger marches into Mr. Melon's office and tells him she quits as the Lemo girl, but she has a great idea for a TV show. She offers to host a cooking show which would help line up many sponsors for the station. Mr. Melon loves the idea, and a delighted Ginger tells Mr. Melon that she'll need an assistant on the show--Jeff, perhaps. But Mr. Melon nixes the idea and then tells Ginger she'll have to get married if she wants to host this show, because he'll want a real life housewife as the hostess.

Episode 38: "Who, What, Where, When, and How"

Episode 39: "Garfield Slept Here"

Jeff tells Caroline that he's sorry he hasn't called her lately, and that he doesn't think they should see each other anymore. Caroline isn't exactly gracious about Jeff breaking up with her, but doesn't try to hold onto him either.

Episode 40: "By Word or Act"

Jeff gets questioned by government agents who are investigating Al's alleged ties to the Communist party. Jeff inadvertently gets suspected as a Communist also when he makes an off-hand remark (intended to be a joke) that gets twisted around by the agent. Ginger then gets questioned about her relationship with Jeff and whether she has any knowledge of Jeff having Communist leanings. She defends Jeff, but ends up being questioned on her own history with the Communist party when the agent brings up her stay in Hollywood.

Jeff later gets beaten up by thugs who think he's a Communist.

Episode 41: "Shabbat Shalom"

Ginger and Arthur set a wedding date and announce it on the Fine Family Foods Hour. Jeff learns that they've set a date and is secretly hurting inside, but is too proud to admit to anyone that he is jealous about Ginger marrying someone else.

Episode 42: "All Good Things"

Charlie and Ginger run into each other at Brandtstaetter's, and Charlie tells her that Gina's called off their engagement. Ginger tries to comfort him by telling him that he'll find someone else, but Charlie tells her that he can't just get over a broken heart like that. He asks her if she really thinks that she'll be just as happy with Arthur as she would have been with Jeff, and Ginger can't answer him. He then tells her that Jeff's bad luck has gotten even worse, and in addition to losing his fiancee, his baseball career, and his job at the radio station, he's now losing his car also.

Ginger later overhears Miss Wescott and Mr. Melon talking in the sound booth and she finally learns that Mr. Melon had intended to fire her as the Lemo Girl, but Jeff had threatened not to go on the air without her. Touched that he would do that for her even after they had broken up, Ginger decides she must help him also. She goes to see Coach Zelnick and tries to talk him into giving Jeff another shot. Coach tells her it's not his job to save every baseball player's career, and that that is the nature of their profession. Ginger gets angry with him and tells him she was wrong about him, because he can't possibly have a heart if he's willing to let Jeff's chance at his dream slip away like that. When she storms off, Coach realizes that Ginger is still in love with Jeff.

Coach goes to see Jeff at the Roadhouse and asks him about his leg. Jeff tells him he's been working on it for the past few weeks and that he's even gotten hold of Satchel Paige's linament and it's helped a lot. Coach asks him where he got the linament, and Jeff informs him that Abe Davis gave it to him. Jeff and Coach go to see Abe, whom Coach used to know back in his playing days. As the two reminisce, Abe tells Coach that he thinks Jeff is ready to get another shot at baseball again. Coach, remembering Ginger's plea, agrees, and Jeff is stunned to hear that Coach is going to arrange a tryout for him.

Arthur agrees to drive Jeff to the stadium for his tryout. On the way to the stadium, they stop by WREQ to pick up Ginger. Things are mighty uncomfortable in the car, as neither Ginger nor Jeff knew that the other would be in the car. Arthur tells Ginger that Jeff's trying out for the team, and Ginger is thrilled when Jeff tells her that Coach had convinced the team to give Jeff another shot. Ginger wishes him luck, as Arthur slyly taunts Jeff about what he should do if he doesn't make the team again.

Ginger watches Jeff during his tryout and Coach notices how happy and proud she looks as she's watching him. Jeff later thanks Coach for the shot he gave him, and Coach once again spies Ginger and sees the happy tears in her eyes. He then comes up with a plan.

Coach rigs Arthur's car so it doesn't start. Arthur comes into Coach's office to ask for change for the phone so Ginger can get a cab to the studio while he waits for the mechanic. Coach nixes the idea and offers to let Jeff borrow his car so he can drive Ginger to the studio. Jeff and Ginger start to protest, knowing how uncomfortable it will be in the car, but Coach takes Jeff aside and confides in him that he was the one who sabotaged Arthur's car so that Jeff would get a chance to be alone with Ginger. Coach tells Jeff that Ginger's still in love with him, but Jeff replies that she had her chance once and chose show business over him. Coach scolds Jeff for giving Ginger an ultimatum and tells him if he doesn't do something now, it will be too late to fix things with Ginger.

In the car, the two ride in awkward silence. Jeff finally breaks the ice by thanking her for convincing Coach to give him another chance. Ginger asks him how he knew, and Jeff tells her that Coach told him. Ginger then thanks him for saving her job on the Lemo Tomato Juice Hour, and Jeff asks how she knew when he told Mr. Melon not to tell her. She tells him that she overheard Mr. Melon say it to Miss Wescott, and she asks him why he didn't want her to know. He tells her that he didn't want to hurt her pride. Ginger tries to thank him again, but Jeff misunderstands and thinks she's angry at him for what he did. She tells him what he did was sweet and that it reminded her of the time he bribed the Look photographer to take her picture. Jeff reminisces with her and muses that this sort of thing seemed to happen to them a lot--setting out to do one thing and having the opposite thing happen. Jeff tries to work up the courage to tell her he still loves her and that he wants her back. Finally he goes for it and pulls over. A surprised Ginger wonders what he's doing. Jeff tells her that he had intended to marry her, and Ginger tells him she had intended to marry him. He tells her that when he drew a line in the sand, he hadn't expected what happened to happen. At last he asks her what he had been wanting to all along: if she will marry him instead of Arthur. Ginger is too stunned to speak at first, and Jeff takes her silence to mean no. He tries to start up the car again, thinking that he's just said the stupidest thing in his life, but Ginger tells him yes. Jeff can't believe his ears. Yes? He repeats it over and over to make sure she really said it. She leans in for a kiss and he knows for certain.

Jeff and Ginger nervously fight over how to tell Arthur but ultimately come to an agreement. Arthur isn't so understanding--he slugs Jeff after learning the news.

Coach calls Jeff to tell him that he's being sent to the minors. Jeff is thrilled and calls Ginger, who is happy for him, but upset when she learns that he has to leave right away and they won't be able to get married tomorrow as they had planned. Determined not to let him slip away a second time, Ginger fetches Father Dreher and convinces him to marry her and Jeff before he leaves for the minors. Ginger and Father Dreher catch Jeff at the train station in time, but Jeff tells them that the train is about to depart. Father Dreher refuses to marry them until they can find a suitable place, so they board the train and have the wedding ceremony in there. Father Dreher marries them just in time for the train to leave the station, and a thrilled Jeff and Ginger lean in for their first kiss as newlyweds.

The celebration will have to wait, however--Jeff and Ginger learn that no roomettes or berths are available until they reach Chicago in 8 hours.
