(Jeff has just blown it on the radio and he and Ginger are now standing in one of the other sound booths to discuss it.) Jeff (softly): Thank you for covering for me. Ginger (slightly hostile): I did it for me. I need this job and from what I hear about your baseball career and your mother's hospital bills, you need this job. Jeff (on the defensive): My leg will be good as new by spring training. I didn't do this on purpose. Ginger's face seems genuinely sorry for her accusatory tone earlier. Jeff seems slightly nervous and glances at her and around the bustling station as if trying to guess her reaction. Ginger: Next time stare at the script, sometimes that helps. Jeff: Okay. Ginger begins to leave but her hand is at her mouth as though she is thinking of an idea. She turns back around. Ginger: May - I could rehe - I could rehearse with you, give you a few pointers. Jeff: I would appreciate that. Ginger (controlled excitement): When? Jeff (softly, almost mesmerized) How about now? (Their eyes lock and the anticipation in the air is electrifying as they begin to move closer to each other. So of course it can't last. Arthur enters, distracting them both. He looks a little unsettled by what he's walked in on.) Arthur: Hi Jeff. Jeff: Hi! Arthur (to Ginger): You better get out of that costume or we're gonna be late. Ginger: Sure. (turning to Jeff) Uh ... so, we'll make u - set up an appointment. Jeff: Fine. Ginger: Fi-fine. (Ginger leaves, smiling at Arthur while Jeff is fiddling with the script.) Arthur (leaning in toward Jeff): Next time slugger, just stare at the script and read. Worked for me. (He winks) Jeff (slight amount of hostility in his tone): Thanks for the advice.
